He told us about a sergeant that was wounded by a piece of shrapnel while in Afghanistan, resulting in chronic back pain. “He told me that during his first year back, he was put on a myriad of medications, most of them opioid-based, only to affect one symptom, which was pain,” Gates said, “Then he started taking another, which was supposedly immune-system modifying.
